The
population of Benajarafe is divided between two different areas: Upper
Benajarafe and Benajarafe Coast.
Upper
Benajarafe is made up of a diverse collection of rural houses and
smallholdings dotted amongst the hills, that run down to the sea.
The occupants
of these gain access to their properties by means of a narrow
road, that runs up from the coast towards the by-pass. In many
cases, leaving this road to travel along dirt tracks or dry stream beds,
which are impassable during the rainy season.
Nowadays,
however, most of the population live on the coast, where individual
developments have increased over recent years.

The
main feature of our village, is a large, flat sandy beach, that extends for
more than two kilometres.
Between
the houses and the beach, is the main road. For decades, the
busy N340 has passed through Benajarafe, with it's large volume of traffic
and consequent problems.
Fortunately,
the new by-pass, built some kilometres inland, has greatly reduced the
amount of traffic. Ensuring also a reduction of accidents and noise
pollution.
We
look forward to an urban environment, with a promenade, where you
can safely take a stroll along the sea-front.
A
general view of the area from the foot of Moya tower, situated
at the eastern edge of our beach.
On
the first web page, there is a photograph, taken from the Málaga side, showing
the approach to Benejarafe.
You
can see from the photo, that the main road runs closely along side
the beach, still preserving the original route of the old coastal
railway.
To
the right, in close-up, you see the access to la Cotija de los Pérez,
with the small traffic island marked on the road.

the left, in close-up, housing development Los Arquillios. Next,
development La Sirena, with one of only two blocks of flats in the
area.
To
the right, a fishing boat, showing our nautical heritage.
Below,
Moya Tower, it's hilltop location dominates the landscape.

Gardens situated
next to the beach.
Even
though our village lacks a lot of recreational amenities these do exist on
the private developments and public access is normally available to these
areas.
On
the other hand, the new urban development has been subject to
building controls. This has ensured that only two high-rise
blocks have been built, the emphasis being on individual homes.
The
future should promise a better outlook than some of the other areas on the
Costas today.
