There
are lots of groups interested in theatre, folk dancing, sports and
handicrafts in our village.
The
highlight is the Benaxaraf Theatre Group that started in 1997 and has
staged nine works since then.
Its
large repertoire includes children’s works plus others from modern Spanish
dramatists.

The
performances take place in the Teleclub, where a small stage has been
built.
The
group has some twenty members, from all age groups. It functions as a
theatre school, as well as a source of plays. These are performed during
the village festivals.
Under, the group of actors that performed ‘ The true and singular
story of the princess and the dragon’ by José L. Alonso de Santos.

With
a lot of imagination and few resources the group has made its own
decorations for each play as you can see from the photo (under).
This is a scene from a satire by Carlos Arniches ‘ The
philosophical cobbler’.
The
group’s repertoire includes: - ‘Andalucia we are everything’,
‘Chronicles of a people’, ‘The parasitic pirate’, ‘The
prodigious cobbler’, by Federico García Lorca, ‘You can be an
assassin’ by Alfonso Paso
and ‘Princesses and ghosts’.
The
village takes environmental issues seriously.
We
have taken steps to safe guard the environment, by cleaning the beaches
and effective treatment of sewage.
The
chameleon, which is the emblem of our region, can be found living here, in
one of the only two places in Europe.
The
local school children have started two campaigns to protect this
endangered species.
These
campaigns have highlighted the life of this unique creature.
A study has been produced to establish its distribution by
documenting sightings.
The
children have even designed their own poster (top right).
Also
they have released captive animals and have voiced their concerns that
urban development is reducing the natural habitat for these animals.
This
awareness campaign is a good thing as it publicises the predicament of the
chameleon. But our heritage is in our children’s hands for the future.
